Bob was a genuine sweet and funny guy. In the spirit of bettering our grades, Mr. Hegele tried to make Bob and I compete for the "top spot". He referred to us as Hertz and Avis. It didn't much matter to us who was Hertz and who was Avis.... well at least not Bob .... what did matter is that we became good friends. I'm sure I speak for many when I say that Bob is remembered as a shining star.
Bob was a totally funny kid in HS. He had a line for everything like, "Wanna take a dip in the pool' to which he'd respond, "there are plenty of dips in the pool."
And on it went. Dee Strass, Chuck Hughes and I were pretty good friends back in those days. At least until my face broke out JR year!! John Heflebower
Even after all these years this is still hard for me. Bob was truly my best friend for more than 25 years. Bob had a hunger to make it big and according to his Mom, he had hit it just before he died. He was a character, no doubt. But he was quick to flash his fabulous smile and help out. Funny? You bet! He introduced me to root beer and cold duck - Oh my god! I can't hear a Beach Boys song without thinking of him or get a whiff of Old Spice and think of him at his locker. The ultimate dude - I miss him so much...
